Rod Merrick, Principal

Rod has dedicated his life’s work to preserving and improving the quality and sustainability of places where people live work and recreate along with the spaces between. His legacy professional experience spans more than forty years with opportunities to serve clients in both the public and private sectors.  He has worked in an interdisciplinary project leadership role with a wide variety of project types, planning and designing government and civic facilities, recreational, semi-conductor, industrial, healthcare, corporate, education, commercial, ecclesiastic, transportation, urban design and residential projects.

As a co-founder of Architects Without Borders Oregon in 2006, and current Board President, he has been able to fulfill a dream of facilitating teams working around the world to serve communities in need that would not otherwise have access to high level design services.

Complimentary to his livelihood work, Merrick has devoted his professional expertise to serving in advisory and leadership roles to civic, governmental, and non-governmental agencies. For twenty years he served on the Portland Pedestrian Program CAC, many of those as chair. He chaired the Portland City Club Environment Land Use and Transportation Committee for several years. He chaired multiple Local School Advisory Committees, serves on his neighborhood Livability and Land use Committee and was four term ENA Board President.

Rod and family moved to Oregon in 1977 to participate in the Oregon vision to accommodate thoughtfully planned growth in geographically contained towns and cities while preserving the agricultural and recreational landscape and rural economy. That vision remains worthy if unfulfilled. With 3 sons raised, Rod and his wife Meg make time for a daily walks, hikes in the mountains, paddles in rivers and extended trips to explore and document cities, structures, art, and landscapes around the world.
